Nazar is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and a leading gynaecology ultrasound expert. He consults and operates at Oak Tree Clinic, Spire Cardiff Hospital, and St Joseph’s Hospital, Newport. Professor Amso specialises in minimal access hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgery, fertility investigations, treatments, adolescent gynaecology. He qualified in 1974 from The College of Medicine at The University of Baghdad and completed his residency training at a number of teaching hospitals in Baghdad. Professor Amso chose to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology and relocated to the UK to accomplish his goals. He completed his PhD thesis in Reproductive Endocrinology and Assisted Reproductive Technologies (IVF). 

Professor Amso’s clinical practice has since focused on developing new and innovative approaches to service delivery for benign gynaecology. He set up the first gynaecology ultrasound-based one-stop menstrual disorders clinic in Wales. He introduced new treatments such as non-surgical interventions for fibroids and balloon endometrial ablation for menorrhagia. Gynaecology ultrasound has been the passion of Professor Amso ever since he was a junior trainee. He was the lead for the South Wales trial centre of the United Kingdom Collaborative Trial for Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS). He undertook many of the advanced scans, while also providing advice and counselling for the trial’s volunteers. 

Following Professor Amso’s retirement from Cardiff University, he shifted his focus to his interest in education and established Medical and Educational Academy. The Academy delivers remote/distance learning medical education in skills-focussed specialties for the UK and the rest of the world.

Nazar’s expertise in ultrasound is being expanded to incorporate 3D ultrasound in his practice to identify uterine anomalies and Caesarean section uterine niches. He is also the first gynaecological surgeon in Wales to undertake Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (vNOTES). He is pivotal in introducing the procedure together with Mr Oudai Ali at St Joseph’s Hospital, Newport, Wales.
